Chief Executive Officer

The Organization: Innovation Guelph (IG) is one of 17 Regional Innovation Centres in Ontario. Incorporated in July of 2011, this year IG celebrates 10 years of excellence providing a continuum of care for SMEs from pre-revenue startups to scaling firms with up to $20 million in annual revenue. A deep mentor/industry specialist roster allows IG to provide the expertise clients need when they need it. Wrapped around that direct mentorship is a robust program of education, networking, cohort-based acceleration, seed/pitch funds, and strategic introductions. Regional priority sectors IG focuses on include agri-innovation, life sciences, cleantech, advanced
manufacturing and supporting digital technologies.

The organization has experienced significant growth in recent years by listening to entrepreneurs and community partners and offering relevant, responsive programs and services. During this time, Innovation Guelph

  • relocated to larger, more accessible space with co-location options and wet-lab facilities
  • grew the IG staff team from 6 to 17
  • introduced the annual Ontario Innovation Expo
  • launched 4 new programs including Rhyze Ventures, a multi-partner collaboration supporting early-stage women identifying entrepreneurs and Rhyze Up!, a national program for scaling women-led companies
  • provided over 29,000 hours of direct mentorship and distributed $1.57 million in seed funds
  • received three awards for business support services, one from the University of Guelph for gender equity work, and both the provincial and national CANIE awards for Business Support from the Innovation and Entrepreneurs Foundation
  • became a key delivery partner in Guelph-Wellington’s circular economy work

More recently, responding to COVID-19 shutdowns, IG pivoted all programs to online delivery in two weeks, ensuring continuity of support for businesses when support was most needed. Innovation Guelph’s agile, holistic approach to supporting entrepreneurs is responsive to their evolving needs and reflects IGs core mandate to help innovative, scalable enterprises start, grow and thrive.

The Role: Innovation Guelph is currently looking for a Chief Executive Officer to lead our concentrated growth. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for leading a team of committed professionals, mentors, and industry specialists. Accountable for executing strategic plans developed in collaboration with the Board, the CEO is also responsible for managing the operations of the organization and ensuring the effective delivery of programs and services. The role fosters a culture and environment that upholds the values and philosophy of Innovation Guelph. The CEO positions the organization as a leader within the innovation ecosystem and in the service of clients.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is:

  • A relationship and partnership builder with a diversity of stakeholders, from governments, industry, universities, and investors, to community partners and sponsors; leverages relationships to further strategic priorities;
  • A strategic leader who thinks long term, with the ability to execute strategic and operational plans and oversee operations, risk, and finances;
  • An excellent communicator, capable of motivating and collaborating with staff, mentors, and industry specialists; capacity to translate strategy into measurable outcomes;
  • Comfortable with uncertainty and complexity; is adaptable and capable of pivoting when presented with new opportunities;
  • Knowledgeable of the external environment and key players that impact the innovation eco-system;
  • A leader with a strong track record of empowering team members, and leading people through change and growth;
  • One who values the board as a partner in strategy development;
  • A leader who has an established track record of building and leveraging professional relationships and networks across the business development eco-system, funding partners, and stakeholders;
  • A spokesperson for Innovation Guelph to the media and the public, and shares expertise and insights with others in the innovation eco-system

For this position we require:

  • University degree, college diploma or relevant work experience in a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in a progressive leadership role, preferably in the areas of business or economic development, entrepreneurship, and innovation
  • Track record of building collaborative and strong partnerships across industry, government, and community stakeholders
  • Experience leading organizations with a diversity of programs and services and with diverse funding sources
  • Demonstrated understanding of governance and compliance frameworks
  • Track record of effective leadership of a diverse team comprised of staff and independent contractors
  • A collaborative leader who fosters an environment of trust and inclusivity
  • Exceptional relationship development skills and the ability to liaise with key stakeholders and community partners
  • Ability to think strategically with an understanding of how the external environment impacts internal strategy
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Critical thinker who can do deep dives into complex subjects and translate data into outcomes
  • A strong team player with the ability to respect and motivate a leadership team
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with a Board of Directors
  • Strong financial acumen and understanding of business operations
  • Knowledge and understanding of the RIC (Regional Innovation Centre) model is considered an asset
