To celebrate Innovation Guelph’s 10th anniversary, we’re sharing stories about its past, present and future. As part of this series, meet Mickey Campeau, program manager for Startups at Innovation Guelph. She’s also the manager of the Innovation Expo. We invited Mickey to answer some questions about Innovation Guelph reaching the 10-year milestone.
What is your role with Innovation Guelph?
I have been working for Innovation Guelph for 5.5 years and am blown away , by how lucky I am to work with such innovative and inspiring entrepreneurs and brave individuals. It is an honour to plan programming, workshops, networking sessions, tradeshows, and have conversations with clients who deserve of success. Our IG clients, and our kick-butt team, motivate me to continue doing what I do.
How did you come to know about IG? How did you get involved?
Before coming to Innovation Guelph, I too was an entrepreneur. One of my clients, an angel investor group, was closely connected to the accelerators and incubators in the region – one of them was Innovation Guelph. I respected the work they did at IG, enjoyed the banter and relationships I developed with the staff at that time, and asked how I could get involved. Little did I know then that I would give up my business fully and jump in so wholeheartedly to this organization and its clients.
What are your thoughts on the 10th Anniversary of Innovation Guelph?
This organization, its people, its connections, its partners – THEY are remarkable! This group of people works so hard to stay on top of trends, information, connections, and industry issues. We do amazing work, and the fact we have been doing it for 10 years is wonderful. But it is the people – the ones who get us excited and energized and who allow us to continue doing what we love every day – they are genuinely the remarkable ones.
Thinking back on your experiences with Innovation Guelph, are there any notable stories, anecdotes, or humorous memories you can share with us?
So many experiences to reflect on!! Here are a few random thoughts that may or may not make sense to all the readers: Office Antics! Front office tai-chi, walks downtown, cupcake celebrations, office bridal showers, the Mentor Band, the slanted ceiling in the original location (watch your head!), the first tour of our new space, Adopt-a-Family Christmases, marshmallow golf, renewals on funding, client successes and celebrations, client socials, Secret Santa, the growth of the Innovation Expo, receiving the video message from Prime Minister Trudeau, handing out seed funding “big cheques,” meeting team members for the first time in person after months of virtual meetings, and so many more fun memories with some great people.
Over the years, our space, team, programs, and collaborations have all grown, but at the heart of everything we do, is the question – what’s right for the clients? We’ve excelled as a Regional Innovation Centre by maintaining this mindset. We have always led with integrity and the best intentions, and I am happy to be part of the history and the next ten years. Thank you to our amazing clients and supporters. Being part of this team is certainly something that makes me proud, and I congratulate the team on the many successes over the past 10 years. Thank you! – Mickey Campeau
