Innovation Guelph’s Executive Director, Anne Toner Fung is part of a delegation of eight, with the City of Guelph, heading to the Global Food Summit in Munich, Germany. The Global Food Summit is a scientific conference featuring innovations in the food sector, taking place March 20 and 21.
Innovative Agri-Food Participants
Out of many nominees, three local companies were invited to attend the Summit based on criteria related to their business stage and size, as well as their contribution to the exciting innovations being produced in the agri-food sector. These are the three IG clients making the trip:
Quinta Quinoa: Quinta Quinoa is an all-natural, sustainable, Canadian-grown quinoa that’s high in fibre, iron, and other nutrients. Founder Jamie Draves has appeared on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, and has received multiple provincial, national and international awards. Draves is now focused on scaling Canadian production and processing of Quinta Quinoa for plant-protein markets to help feed the world’s growing population in an ecologically sustainable way.
Be Seen Be Safe: The Be Seen Be Safe app promotes the prevention of agricultural disease spread and creates a virtual and automated visitor book allowing for fast disease track and trace at the farm level. With permission, a virtual geofence borders the farm property. Visitors with the smartphone app are then recorded as they cross the geofence. Be Seen Be Safe is partnering with the HEALTHWATCHER project developed by PigCHAMP and has obtained the EUREKA Certificate.
TRU-ID: TRU-ID is the world’s first food certification program founded on cutting edge DNA biotechnology, in support of businesses who seek authentic ingredients. TRU-ID provides DNA-based tools and services to identify species adulteration of food and natural health products, mitigating the impact of inauthentic products to brands, companies, investors and consumers. They do this via quality assurance DNA testing, brand security and supply chain verification. They have received the National Research Council award for developing innovative tools for ingredient authentication and the Ontario Centre of Excellence award for leadership in molecular diagnostic biotechnology. Pitching at the Global Food Summit
One of the companies listed above has also been chosen as one of six international startups to pitch at the Global Food Summit for international recognition. Jamie Draves, President & CEO of Quinta Superfoods, will be representing the only Canadian company pitching at the Summit to a discerning international audience.
The six international startups (including Quinta Superfoods) scheduled to pitch were selected because they exemplify game-changing trends associated with urban lifestyles. Draves is presenting in the category of shifting diets. Each business will have three minutes for their pitch, followed by three minutes of questions from the audience. The audience will then cast their votes for the winner of the Global Food Summit People’s Choice Award 2019.
A Global Opportunity
Participation in the Global Food Summit provides an opportunity for Quinta Quinoa, Be Seen Be Safe and TRU-ID to enhance their knowledge, elevate their global profile, make valuable international connections and expand their reach into new markets. For Jamie Draves and Quinta Superfoods, international recognition for agri-food innovation is also in the cards.
Innovation Guelph is excited to provide this opportunity and grateful for the support of the City’s Economic Development Department and Global Affairs Canada to help make it happen.
